2006 Sassicaia Pre-Arrival
Sassicaia could be described as Italy’s answer to Bordeaux, but we prefer
to see it as Italy’s answer to the world! We think Sassicaia is one of the
greatest wine creations of our century. It also happens to be a simply
marvellous drink”. - Serena Sutcliffe MW and David Peppercorn MW, Italy's Answer to the
World.
Since its first release in 1968 to worldwide acclaim, Sassicaia, a blend of hand harvested Cabernet
and Cabernet Franc, has been seducing wine lovers the world - over with its power, concentration,
depth and elegance.
Inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, Mario Rocchetta noted many similarities between the
terroir of San Guido Estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany and that of Graves in Bordeaux. Experimenting with
the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Rocchetta discovered that the
soil lent itself exceptionally well to these Bordeaux varietals. However, these non-native grape
varieties were not permitted to be sold under Tuscany’s tradtional DOC and DOCG laws, and as such
were only entitled to the lowly ‘vino la tavola’ denomination. But, given both the inherent quality and the price this wine
commanded, the wine world felt it required its own (albeit unrecognised) denomination and dubbed
it (and those that followed suit) the ‘Supertuscan’.
The 2006 vintage of the ‘Don’ of Super Tuscans is available in limited quantities.
Don’t miss this opportunity to secure what promises to be yet another great
vintage of the decade... it’s an offer - “you just can’t refuse....”
“The 2006 Sassicaia may very well go down as one of the all-time great recent vintages for this
Tuscan thoroughbred. The year started off very warm but by August evening temperatures had
moderated, leaving the fruit with a stunning combination of ripeness, perfume, acidity and tannin.
The wine is simply glorious, that’s all there is to it. Layers of dark fruit meld into smoke, leather,
violets, menthol, earthiness and tar as this profound wine opens up in the glass. The creamy, silky
finish lasts an eternity, as waves of fruit caress the tannins with breathtaking elegance. Everything is
in the right place in this magical Sassicaia. This is one for the ages. In a word: Awesome. Anticipated
maturity: 2012-2031. 97 points” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
“Displays sweet tobacco, plum and berry aromas, with a jammy undertone, turning to licorice on the
palate. Full-bodied and balanced, with silky tannins, a lovely texture and plenty of fruit. Outstanding
Sassicaia, with structure and finesse. 85 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 percent Cabernet Franc.
Best after 2013. 20,000 cases made. 94 points” James Suckling, Wine Spectator
