This vintage was an “easier” and more manageable one compared to the 2015. Cooler and more even, with no rain pressures, it gave wines with ample depth of flavour and density, but lowish (12.5%) alcohols with beautiful vibrancy and the graceful strength of a ballet dancer. It’s more “fruity” and less “ferruginous” than the 2015, showing off cassis liqueur, blackcurrant, spice, black cherry, dry scrub aromas. The palate is beautifully full and rich, but with super elegance. The biodynamics bring on flavour development in the grapes earlier in the season, so it has full flavour at a modest alcohol level, and a corresponding albeit hidden higher level of acidity to help the ageing process. A benchmark wine from Cullen. Randall Pollard.
Vanya Cullen champions all things environmentally friendly at her Margaret River vineyard. This pristine regional cabernet blend has aromas of black currant, cedar, chocolate and briar. It's succulent and intense, yet delicate. Needs age to blossom into a classic. Ralph Kyte-Powell
96 points! Here’s a sleek wine of exquisite perfume and balance that treads lightly, but surely through the palate. Dances, even. There’s a quiet storm of graphite tannin, red and black fruits, a distinct pencil and mineral thing going on, clean fresh acidity, and a wonderfully long finish. It’s painting with water colors, to borrow a phrase, but gee it makes a beautiful picture. It’s rare to find a Cabernet with this level of poise and control. Yet again, Cullen is leading the pack.
