Clive Coates MW says, in “The Wines of Burgundy” that the wines of Santenay, even the lighter ones are more full bodied, and they are becoming more Beaune-ish, more fruity, rounder and better with improved temperature control and sympathetic techniques.” These two wine are perfect examples.
"Supposedly a better site according to Clive Coates, as it’s closer to Chassagne to the north. However I find them both equal in quality at this stage. Perhaps the Beaurepaire is a little more fleshy.
Purchased in 1968 and replanted in 1981, this parcel also has a SE exposition with similar “Cote de Nuits” soil structure to the Beaurepaire. However it is 300 mt A.S. so has very cool nights during the ripening months and it is a wine with more “charpenté” or structure, and it’s more closed when young. Of course it still has the fleshy richness and sweet opulent fruit that Jean and David Moreau seem to create these days." RANDALL
