Pete Schell is a hell of a solid winemaker, one of the more exciting to step out of the ‘new gen’ of producers who source widely, seeking verity from older, finer sites. More purity and finesse in these wines than many many from other Barossa producers.
Earthy, brambly red berry fruits, then a dusting of sweet spice and a whiff of pepper and rosemary. A little piquancy in the aromatics translates itself to the front and back palate, but in judicious measures it produces lift and freshness. Lithe and supple in texture, there’s some mid palate depth, with flesh and concentration of wild black berry fruits. Tannins are light, giving the wine form, without overtaking the direction. Lovely drinking. MIKE BENNIE, www.winefront.com.au
