Wantirna Estate’s cabernet blend is all about elegance and class; there’s nothing blockbuster-ish to be found here.
That said, this cabernet is open for business, and can easily be enjoyed now. It’s superbly well balanced and beautifully ripe. The combination of flavours: olives and dried herbs, nuts and blackcurrant, perhaps some game. Nothing feels forced or out of place; it’s an harmonious wine. And a juicily refreshing one too. Both to smell and to drink; this wine is beautiful. 94 Points, CAMPBELL MATTINSON
Reg Egan pioneered the Yarra Valley wine region in its late-20th-century incarnation at his Wantirna Estate in the 1960s. Inspired by tales of the flourishing wine region of Victorian times, he set about his task with commitment and passion. Now joined by winemaker daughter Maryann, he fashions great wines from this isolated pocket of viticulture in Melbourne's 'burbs. This deeply coloured 2008 Amelia cabernet has a very complex nose, reminiscent of juicy blackcurrants and sweet berries, a savoury, leafy, briary touch and subtle earthy oak influence. Medium bodied, with seamless flow across the palate, it meanders through fine, soft tannins into a long, tangy aftertaste. (13.5 per cent alcohol; Diam cork) RALPH KYTE-POWELL
