From 30yo vines, this is a complex and amazingly youthful cabernet for its age. In fact the two characteristics that are striking are the vibrant colour and the resemblance to Bordeaux with nuances of iodine and rust intermingled with fruit. The nose is perfumed and intriguing with a more subtle but persistent and complex kind of fruit [cassis, blueberry, plum] not often seen in Aussie reds. Both nose and palate ooze with classy, fresh and complex fruit, along with gentle capsicum and spice characteristics with totally understated coffee and undergrowth nuances. If you haven’t already guessed it from my notes, I’m besotted by this wine, especially at THIS price. It sold at $50 upon release, not bad value, but if it were double our current price, I would still buy a case! It has a freshness and aristocratic power with deft balance that is usually only seen in expensive Bordeaux or top Yarra Cabernets from only a handful of producers. If you serve this to your guests from a decanter, after they tasted it, I’m sure they would automatically assume it was an expensive red. Buy up now at the totally ridiculous price of $11.99!
